Need Outlook 2000 to Use Contacts List for Email Addresses Instead of Address Book
Hopefully,Robert Crayk will see this as the message below involves a question he posed on this issue and my reply. I'm reposting because nearly two day have elapsed since he posed that question and I replied. IN case anyone else may be able to help, I'm enclosing the text of postings leading up to Robert's question. When I send E-Mail using Outlook 2000 (under WindowsXP Professional) and click on the "To" button (whether using Word as the editor or not) it brings up a separate Address Book; not my Outlook Contact List. At least, it seems tat way, since names in my Contact List do not show up in the Address Book that pops up. How can I get Outlook 2000 to use my Contact List to get E-Mail addresses to with which to send messages? Rest assured that I shall greatly appreciate your help on this. {*filter*} Smith ============================================================================ ================= Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book, right click the folder choose Properties and Outlook Address Book ensure checkbox to enable as email address book is checked; if this is dimmed or geyed then go on to No.2 2. Go to Tools > Email Accounts > check "View or change existing directories or address books" > is the Outlook Address Book present > if it is present then remove it close and restart Outlook and then re-add it > if it isn't present then add it > close and restart Outlook. Robert Crayk ============================================================================ ============================ Thanks, Robert! I appreciate your feedback. The Enable as e-mail box was shaded out. So, I tried suggestion 2. However, I find no "Email Accounts" option listed on the Outlook 2000 Tools menu. Is there another way to solve this problem? Dick Smith ============================================================================ ============================= Oops sorry{*filter*} part 2 was for Outlook 2002, for Outlook 2000 what mode of Outlook are you using, to check mode go to Help > About > 2nd line (should say Internet Only or Corporate/Workgroup) Robert Crayk ============================================================================ ============================== Thanks, again, Robert! The second line reads: Internet Only Security Update. {*filter*} Smith

Then none of the instructions you have received apply to your setup. You do not need to add or configure the Outlook Address Book Service in IMO. It is installed and configured by default. All you have to do is enable any Contacts Folder in your PST file as e-mail address books (R click > Properties > Outlook Address Book Tab). The root Contacts Folder will be enabled by default (and the option is greyed out so you can't change it). Any additional Folders you want to display should have that option checked. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]

Thank you, Russ. That choice on the Outlook Address Book is indeed checked & grayed out as you said. Is there any way that users can choose E-mail Address 2 for a given recipient? Thanks again! -- With kindest regards, Dick Smith

Need Outlook 2000 to Use Contacts List for Email Addresses Instead of Address Book
No. That option only exists when using Corporate/Workgroup mode, which lists each e-mail address separately. IMO is a stripped down version of Outlook which uses the Windows Address Book as its address book engine instead of the Outlook Address Book. It does not provide that flexibility. You might be able to use Outlook's autoresolution feature to emulate that capability. If you enter part of a name or a nickname in the To: field then tab out of the field (or hit Alt-K [Check Names]), Outlook will attempt to resolve the name against your address book. You can right click on the name to manually resolve it to the second e-mail address. Outlook will then save that resolution for future use. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]
