How to Shrink Outlook.pst file?
I'm in the process of migrating my calendar, contacts and to-dos from ECCOpro to Outlook 2002 under WinXP pro. I've pretty much got all my appointments and contacts and to-dos over to Outlook and now notice the file Outlook.pst, which is in C:\Documents and Settings\Robert D. Baron\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook, is about 25mb in size. I suspect some of this is due to the fact that I never archived the old ECCO entries and when they were imported into Outlook they took up a lot of space. I could really do away with entries before say two years ago, which I assume would free up some space. If I knew how. Help appreciated. Thanks, --Bob

Well, since these were imported, the modified date has probably been changed, so Outlook's AutoArchive feature probably wouldn't help us. You could create a new personal folder file (PST) and manually move items to it (File New | Outlook Data File). The message folders would be easy - just sort by received date and Shift click to select a series of messages. You can just drag and drop them into the new PST file. The Calendar, Task, and Journal folders may be a bit different, however. You could do something like arrange them by Category and sort them by Date (View | Current View | Customize Current View). -- PATRICK REED [Outlook - MVP]~~~~~~ -Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) -Have you checked http://www.slipstick.com? -Please post your Outlook version!

How to Shrink Outlook.pst file?
Thanks, that shrunk me a lot, from approx. 25mb down to only 11+. Now a related question: While searching for a 'better' method I've been 'synchronizing' the Outlook .pst folders on my office and home desktops using a ZIP disk and Outlook's export/import function. Using this method, will I have to perform the shrinking operation on my home computer this evening before importing to it, in order to slim it down to a comparable size? I sure don't want to be exporting all that excess information back to the office in the morning, and I have a sneaking suspicion that when I import my office file to the home computer tonight it will just add to the existing file, not overwrite it. Thanks again, Bob

Yes, you'd have to do it there, too since the import won't get rid of what is already there. Thanks, I've looked at it already. I am now using the file export/import and ZIP disk method as a temporary technique until I land on a better solution for permanent use; it is way too slow for daily synching. I'm considering using a pda-type device as the linchpin (a BlackBerry 6210) or perhaps a software solution such as XTNDConnect; I'm currently in the exploratory stage. I appreciate your help and suggestions. --Bob
