Drag-and-Drop Emails into Windows folders!

 Drag-and-Drop Emails into Windows folders!

Using Outlook 2000 Professional, one of my office persons
is dragging their individual email record from Outlook
Mail into a Windows folder.  I also tried this, and it
worked.  When the new file is clicked on, Outlook comes
up.  We think the attachment is actually kept in the same
file.

I haven't seen this documented anywhere, and searched this
newsgroup for "drag" info and found nothing on this.
Would anyone know about this and if there are any
limitations or drawbacks??!

When you drag a message out of Outlook, it copies it as a
freestanding file, with the extension "eml". If you
doubleclick on the file, by association it knows to use
Outlook to view the file. You can also do this by clicking
on "file | save as..." from within any Outlook message.

Actually, it saved it as a .msg file, and was
freestanding.  We weren't able to get the same result
using cut & paste, although I just did a "Save As" and
chose the .msg filetype, and it appears to have done the
same thing.  I just highlighted 2 files and drag-and-
dropped them at the same time.  So maybe it is the same as
the "Save As" option then, just more convenient...
Thanks for your response!

You're right, the extension is msg, the eml extension is
used in Outlook Express, which I use at home. But the
concept is the same.

Some people use this method to archive their emails
outside of Outlook. Of course you can create a pst file
and do the same thing, but then all the emails are wrapped
up in one file, which if corrupted means the loss of
everything.
