 errors changing font attributes

I'm running PowerPoint with Office97 (with SR-1 installed) on Windows NT
Workstation (with SP3 installed).

The following error occurs at some point during every session (but not
always right away) when I attempt to change the type of font in text objects
or in autoshapes with text:

"PowerPoint found an error that it can't correct.  You should save
presentations, exit, and then restart PowerPoint."

Needless to say, doing what the error message suggests fails to make the
problem go away.

The problem also appears when I merely try to resize a font, although in
this case PowerPoint appears to hang.  I can regain control of PowerPoint by
switching to another application and then back to PowerPoint (but then I
still can't change the font or size of any text).

This is driving me nuts!

Thanks for any insights,

This can happen if your default printer is a network printer and you aren't
connected to the network.  Try changing the default printer to a local one and
see if the problem goes away... If that isn't it, there's an article in the KB
(Q141247) which claims to explain/fix the problem, but which has never yet
worked for me.  Worth a try, probably.  Microsoft also once suggested that it
might be a video driver problem; try booting in VGA mode and see if it still
happens.  Or, if you're using local printer drivers, try replacing them.

That error message is chronic here, and as yet unsolved, so if you make it go
away post your solution.
