cannot get macro to run on action settings attached to action button

I cannot get a perfectly good macro to run under the "run macro" selection
in
the Slide Show/action settings for an action button in "View SlideShow".
I have tried several and it won't work.  This is the latest version of
PowerPoint,
Office 97.  I chose typical installation.  Should I have chosen a custom
installation?

The macro runs when I attach it to a customized menu in Power Point.

I have tried everything I can think of.  Is there something that has to be
turned on in
this program before that selection can work?  The name of the macro can be
selected
when I darken the "Run Macro" option box.   The hyperlink function works and
the Play sound
function works.  I am stumped.  Please help.

Nah, it doesn't matter.  The problem is probably that it isn't a
'perfectly good macro'.

Usually, that's irrelevant.  There's lots of things that work in
Slide-edit mode that won't work in SlideShow mode.

If there's an error in the macro, PPT won't give you the error message
in a slide show (which is generally a good thing).  It'll just stop
the macro.  So, to debug the thing, you either have to set up a
breakpoint in the macro or set up your own error handler to catch
stuff.  I *think* the 'break on all errors' option might help here as
well.

Usually, when things run from a menu but not from a slide, there's
some kind of error in the macro.  Put an 'On Error Goto' at the top of
your command to check for this.  Post again if this doesn't make
sense, or even post some code and we'll look at it.

PS.  This whole way of handling errors in slide shows is kinda nice,
but I sure wish they had documented it.  It took me quite a while to
figure out what was going on the first time it bit me.
