Word 2002 (XP) and Word 97 installed - Urgent! - Problems with associations
I have had Office XP Professional installed for some time, successfully, and stupidly, I now see, for what I thought was a good reason, I installed Word 97 (on its own) onto the PC this evening, into a 'C:\Word97' directory. I now find that all my Word 2002 docs will not open, i.e. Word 2002 opens, but I then get the error message - 'Microsoft Word: the document name or path is not valid - check file permissions, blah, blah' - can do nothing, so click on Ok, when Word opens a blank doc (the permission is 'open'.) The doc properties are 'DOC file' (in caps). In Explorer, this File type is associated with Word 2002. Curiously, the backups (wbk) open perfectly normally in Word 2002. Their Properties are 'Word97-2002'!! If I open Word itself (rather than going through Explorer), the 'Doc' docs open and can be read, but they can't be saved in another format, e.g. Word97 and 2002 RTF, i.e. they 'save', but then up comes the same error message as above, and a blank doc is opened. Other associations have changed. HTML documents, which I'm sure opened in Word, now open in IE. Tweak Ui\Repair Icons has no effect, when normally it does. I do not wish to use \Repair Associations, since I suspect that could get me into deeper water. When I try to uninstall Word 97, from Add/Remove, inserting the Office 97 CD, the hour glass whirrs away, and nothing happens. Likewise, with Office XP - whatever I click on - repair, uninstall, etc.,., same result. I cloned my hard drive last night, using Norton Ghost, so I can get back to what I had then, but I would lose a stack of work on Word docs I did today, and cannot afford the time to do that work all over gain. Advice/solutions? I would be most grateful

Vibes, You really need to refer this question to an Office newsgroup. There *may* be a simple fix that they've worked out in there. -- Hyperlinks are used to ensure advice is current. ________________________________________________ There are fake MVPs in this group http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/default.aspx?scid... -us;mvpaward&style=toc

Word 2002 (XP) and Word 97 installed - Urgent! - Problems with associations
Winston, I want rid of Word 97, but uninstall not work. Word 2002 is associated with the DOC files. I imagine the path is the difficulty, given my explanation in my previous post. Is there not a simple way, like that (but I do not know how), to resolve the fact that when I double click on a DOC file, I get the Word 2002 error message, re the path?

Word 2002 (XP) and Word 97 installed - Urgent! - Problems with associations
Sorry..if it were me..I'd remove Office 2002..reinstall Word97, uninstall Word 97, clean the registry and program folders of Msft Office, then reinstall Office2002. If I recall.. the office web site may have an Office removal tool..to aid the process ..winston
