Inserting Symbols (Word 97 on Windows 2000)

I cannot insert symbols from the menu bar as normal.  When
I issue that command Word responds by adding a round
bullet (complete with tab to indent) rather than bringing
up the Insert Symbols dialog box.  Has anyone heard of
this before?  I'm using Word 97 on Windows 2000).

Open Tools | Customize and drag the Symbols button off the toolbar (or
Symbol command off the Insert menu--your description is ambiguous). Drag a
new one from the Insert category. That will take care of the possibility
that someone used the Symbol button face for a button that inserts a bullet
(or applies bullets, whichever it is that the button is doing).

If that doesn't work, then it's possible someone has gotten cute and written
a macro to insert a bullet and named it InsertSymbol. You can check on this
in Tools | Macro | Macros.

It turned out to be the second option, and the culprit was
me.  I created a macro a while ago to do this and
unfortunately named it InsertSymbol.  Thanks for the help!

It's a good idea to be aware of what Word's built-in commands are called.
Familiarizing yourself with the list under All Commands in Customize is one
approach to this.
