Merging cells in table and giving tabs in side multiple cells
To answer your second question first, if you select an entire column, you
can add a tab using either the ruler or the Tabs dialog (you'll need to
access the dialog to select the period leader, anyway).
As for merging cells, this is a feature that unfortunately was broken in the
upgrade from (I think) Word 95 to Word 97. If you select cells in two
columns and several rows to be merged, they're all merged into a single
cell. There is, however, a workaround: display the Tables and Borders
toolbar, select the Eraser tool, and use that to erase the column border;
the row structure will be preserved.
