Excel X crashes on opening pwd protected WB

I am running Mac OS 10.2.1 and Office 10.1.1. I have a workbook that is
a grade list consisting of 19 worksheets. (This is for a class that has
18 sections of 25-30 students each plus one worksheet for grand totals.)
If I use Save as... -> Options... to set a password to protect the
workbook from openning and then save, I can no longer get into the
workbook. If I try to open it I am prompted for the password, which I
give, and then Excel shows a progress bar for openning the WB. About a
third or half way into openning (which doesn't take very long because it
isn't that large--about 700K total) Excel "unexpectedly quits". I can
take that same WB (after protecting) to a Win2000/Office2000 machine and
open it without problems.

I have tried this several times on different OS 10.2.1 machines (don't
have any 10.1 machines anymore) with less and less protection (at first
I had cells locked/unlockel w/ individual worksheets protected, the
workbook protected & shared, etc.) until it finally seems to reduced
down to this one issue--adding a password to protect from openning. I
tried the same thing with a brand new workbook (generic Workbook1.xls
with Sheet1, Sheet2, Sheet3 and nothing added) and it worked fine. I
could add a password, save, and then open again after supplying the
password. However, if I took that same generic workbook, that already
had password protection and was already openning fine, and copied the
worksheets from my grade list into the new workbook and saved (ordinary
save--password was already set, so no need to do it again), then Excel
would crash on trying to open it. There is nothing fancy on these
worksheet--score, sums to get total scores, averages, std dev, etc. No
macros.

Any one have suggestions on what is going on?

Thanks.

To add a little more info...

After experimenting a little more it seems to be dependent on either the
number of worksheets or the size of the workbook. A blank workbook with
6 blank worksheets can be password protected/saved and then reopenned.
If I take that same workbook (already password protected) and replace 5
worksheets with copies of pages from my other workbook, no problem. I
can save/close/reopen. When I add a sixth worksheet form the other
workbook, then excel will crash when the workbook is reopenned. With 5
sheets the workbook is just over 120K, with 6 it is about 150K.

Again there is nothing special on the worksheets. They include student
names, scores, sums (for total scores), and various statistical
functions like average, median, etc. (applied only to data on the same
sheet, not across sheets). No macros or anything else complicated. No
graphics or charts. Very little formating of any type.

Have you tried updating Excel? My friend's Excel (also running on Mac OS
10.2.1) was crashing when opening some large files with macros (no
passwords). I installed the 10.1.1 Office update, and it hasn't crashed
since. The update description claims that it "addresses several
stability issues that may be caused by running Office v. X using Mac OS
10.2."

You can find the updates at
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/default.asp?navindex=s10#OfficeX.

Good luck.

Yes. I've installed SR1 and the 10.1.1 security update to office
(although this doesn't update excel).
