Reducing File Size/Increasing Speed

 Reducing File Size/Increasing Speed

Here's one for you Excel gurus.

I have built a spredsheet model in Excel 97, whose file size is about 2
MG.  This contains several user forms, 20-30 macros, 8-10 active charts
in the workbook, a ton of vlookups.  Ok - so the file size may not shock
some people.  I am looking for ways/recommendations to shrink the file
size and increase the speed of the model.  I've heard that vlookups can
be a memory hog.  But I don't really see an easy way around using them,
but am open to suggestions.  Right now, it takes an annoyingly long time
to save.  I am running this model on a pentium, 166.  Any suggestions?

To reduce file size, you should look if there are many blank columns and
rows.  If you press Ctrl-End and the visible cells are all blank, you
probably have unused cells adding to the file size.  I have found that
deleting unused columns has a larger impact on file size than unused rows.

In certain situations I have been able to replace Vlookup formulas with
SumIf formulas.

You can export all your objects (Macros, forms, etc etc) and then put in on
a new blank Spreadsheet. It works for me!
