I posted a problem a week or so ago that others have had - which was when trying to convert a Word 2002 document to PDF using PDF Maker (Acrobat 5.0.5), I was getting a "Not sufficient memory" message and looping - had to shut Word down with the Task Manager, and therefore, not able to create the pdf document. I have links, table of contents and cross references in the documents. An Adobe article states that you should try setting the default printer to Distiller before creating the document in order for PDF Maker to work with Word 2002. I tried this with a smaller document with TOC, hyperlinks and cross reference links and was able to create the pdf document. This may be the answer to this particular problem.
