 97 to Access 2000 Compile-time Throw-outs

Is anyone experiencing Access 2000 compile-time nasties:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down"
"MSACCESS caused an invalid page fault in module VBE6.DLL at 0177:6502ceb6"
(and thereabouts)

-I get this problem in 2 independent programs (7mB & 27mB, the larger about
330 forms) when compiling AFTER conversion. I have no difficulty with small
programs, nor small portions of my "large" programs.
-They convert from A97 to A2000 without error (though I sometimes get
conversion lock-ups) and they run OK.
-If I force a complete A2000 recompile it throws me out as above. I have
done complete cleanups/recompiles in Access97 on my other computer before
-Attempts to convert to an mde inevitably lock-up.
-The other thing I noticed is that I get strange A2000 errors if I attempt
to delete some of the forms "The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the
process because you and another user are attempting to change the same data
at the same time" (there's only me on my network) and forms typically
disappear but can't be imported from another copy because it already exists
(and it's not any particular form)
-I spent several days "cleaning up" older-style code with no apparent
affect, though it was good for me !

I have Win98/128mB & Office 2000 Developer cut 2720. I almost always cold
re-start after these errors.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced similar compile-time
