Inserting (not linking or embedding) many images in Word 97

Hi there,

I need to bring a lot of largish images into Word.  I made the mistake
of dragging and dropping them into the document and literally have
made a 600 mB behemoth document.

Now that I realize that I am going to have to insert them, does anyone
out there have a VBA thingy that I can use to insert these gracefully
into my new document?

Thank you in advance.

The important trick is to scale, size, and set the resolution of the files
before they get to Word. Using copy and paste, and working on the files
within Word, cause most of the file size blow-out.

Work on them in a graphics editor to get them exactly as you need them in
Word, then save as JPG, GIF, or whatever is smallest; then insert those
files.

VBA can automate the actual insertion, but it can't do much to improve the
file bloat if the files aren't optimized first.

That really wasn't the issue.  The issue is, when you drag and drop a
graphics file that is associated with Paint Brush Pro (which I have
installed on my computer), the drag and drop process creates an OLE
link.  If you insert via the insert graphics command, it inserts a
copy of the drawing in the document.

There is an ENORMOUS difference in file sizes of the two.  I can
insert one of my tif files into a Word document and save it to a file
that is less than 100k in size.  If I drag and drop the exact same
image into a Word document and save it, it will be a 1.6Mb (yes
MegaByte) files.  Supposedly all this comes as a result of the OLE
linkage.

Multiply this times 100 - 200 images and you begin to see the issue.
Unfortunately inserting 100 - 200 images into a doc via the insert
picture command takes time.  Lots of it.  Particularly if you have the
image preview set in your open file dialog box.

I was looking for a semi automated way of doing this insert picture of
the images.  I was unable to locate a fast and easy way, so I did it
the old fashioned way.
