How Keep Comments Close To Commented Cells?
Does anyone know how to make comments stay close to the commented cell? Right now my opened comments always appear at the same place so if I hide some columns, the comments are then far away from the commented cells.

[This followup was posted to microsoft.public.excel.misc with an email copy to John Liu. Please use the newsgroup for further discussion.] How are you entering these comments? It doesn't seem like they are XL comments (Insert | Comment). XL comments are linked to the cell and disappear if the column is hidden. -- Regards, Tushar Mehta www.tushar-mehta.com --

Hi John, There is no control over where the comments will appear relative to the cell they belong in. The only control is under Tools, Options, View, Comments: none / comment indicator only / comment and indicator Would not recommend the last option, particularly if you commented cells are close to one another as the comments overlap themselves and obscure your data. There are also Text Boxes, but neither Text Boxes nor Comments seem to match your description of hiding columns and ending up with comments further away, and as Tushar indicated if you hide a column with the comment both column and comments for those cells will disappear. How Keep Comments Close To Commented Cells?
I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. Suppose I comment cell Z6. When I open (show) the comment, it appears right next to cell Z6. Then I hide columns B-Y. Now when I show the comment for cell Z6, it appears way over around column AX. This becomes a problem in financial models where I do quarterly statements (e.g. quarters for the year 2000 in columns AA-AD and the annual in column AE), but sometimes I show the quarters and sometimes I hide them. My comments on the annuals then sometimes appear very far from the commented cell. On Mon, 18 Dec 2000 17:35:51 -0500, "David McRitchie" Quote:

How Keep Comments Close To Commented Cells?
Hi John, Thanks for the specifics. (don't think there is a solution) I got the same result in Excel 2000 with indicator and comment shown (mine appeared around BB3:BD9). If you only show the indicator the comments will remain near where added. And if a new comment is inserted immediately below (in Z7) it will appear immediately next to whether indicator only, or comment and indicator. Curious as to why you would want to show the comment continuously and obscure data. So I guess that was never tested rigorously. You can print the comments at the end of your spreadsheet (page setup, sheets), but don't suppose that helps. How Keep Comments Close To Commented Cells?
It mostly a question of ease in editing. So, in my prior example, say I want to edit the comment for cell Z6. I'm changing an assumption and want to reflect why, for example. I show the comment in order to have the ability to edit it. But the shown comment box is way off the screen, so I have to scroll over to the right to find it, make my edits (and it may be inconvenient not to be able to see column Z while I'm editing a comment about cell Z6), then scroll back to get to where I was. Or I could scroll over, click and drag the comment to a more convenient location, but it stays a convenient location only so long as I keep columns B-Y hidden. It is, sometimes, a question of printing too. Sometimes I'll print two versions of a model, one with comments showing and one without. That is sometimes a handy way to have the model and the rationale for the assumptions in the file. It's not a big deal, but Excel is such a highly-developed (and usually excellent) application that the balky behaviour of comments is odd. My problems with Scenario Manager (see other post) are more substantive, I confess. On Mon, 18 Dec 2000 23:35:36 -0500, "David McRitchie" Quote:

[This followup was posted to microsoft.public.excel.misc with an email copy to John Liu. Please use the newsgroup for further discussion.] Tested with XL2000SR1: After showing the comment, click on the outline so that you select the comment object. If done correctly, the comment insertion cursor will *not* be visible. Then select Format | Comment... | Properties tab. Set the option to either 'Move and size with cell' or 'Move but do not size with cell.' -- Regards, Tushar Mehta www.tushar-mehta.com --

How Keep Comments Close To Commented Cells?
Hi Tushar & John, Thanks, I always hide the cell comments. I knew I could edit a cell comment, change the font etc., but had thought it was show them all at once or just the activecell. I see they are there is a lot more flexibility in the display. Cell comments can be shown all at once or hidden all at once with or without only their cell comment triangle showing in Tools, options, view. Comments: _ None, x_Comment indicator only, _ Comment & indicator In addition individual Cell comments can be shown or hidden by right clicking on the cell with a cell comment and choosing Hide or Show Comment. Cell comments that are shown can be reformatted and can be moved. Hiding and unhiding columns may drastically affect position of a cell comment, but you can move it around by DClick on the cell comment outline. RClick on a cell will show these options as applicable: Insert Comment, Edit Comment, Delete Comment, Show Comment. RClick on the cell comment itself has several options besides providing the ability to change font and to move the comment that includes special options when multiple comments are shown: i.e. the ability to move the cell comment to front, move to back, move forward, move backward to determine which comment will appear on top of the others. Insert menu, will show as applicable: Insert comment, Edit Comment HTH, Like Tushar, I have Excel 2000, but you might want to recheck your Excel 97 to see what actually is available. David McRitchie
