Book1.xls opens when I open an excel file on my H.D.

Every time I open an excel file from my hard drive it also
opens book1.xls.  If I close the document, book1.xls
closes as well and vice versa.  Any clues?  Please help!

You have to explain to Excel that you don't want a new Book every time you
open a file.

Go to Start>Settings>Folder>Options>File Types.  Scroll down to MS Excel
Worksheet.  Then if running Win98 OS Edit> select "Open" and Edit.

If using WinXP OS you would scroll down to .XLS then "Advanced".

You will append  /e to the command line you find there.  Mine looks like this.
Your path may differ.

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\EXCEL.EXE" /e

You must have the double quotes and a space after second " before the /e.

See Help>Switches for other startup switches that can be used.
