Summing adjacent cells: another cell added to formula!
Excel 2000 (v. 9.0.2720)
This is such an obvious bug that it's almost unbelievable. Tell me I'm doing
something wrong.
The formula in cell I5 is
=D5+E5+F5+G5
Cells D5 through G5 are to be entered with numerical data (or any of them may
be left blank), as is cell H5. (But note that H5 is not included in the
formula in cell I5.)
Under certain circumstances, e.g., if all four cells from D5 through G5 happen
to be entered with numerical data, with H5 also getting an entry, the formula
in cell I5 arbitrarily changes to:
=D5+E5+F5+G5+H5
This is the case with other variants of the formula (e.g., =SUM(D5:G5)) as
well.
One workaround is to insert a blank column between columns G and H, to break
the "sequence".
Anyway, does Microsoft have a patch to correct this? Again, it's such a
blatantly basic, but serious, error for a worksheet, that it's unbelievable.
(Or, is it some supposed form of "automation" gone awry??)
Thanks for any help.
