Excel 200 Macro Error (PERSONAL.XLS already open)

Excel 200 Macro Error (PERSONAL.XLS already open)

When I attempt to execute certain of my Excel 2000 macros, I receive
the error message "A document with the name PERSONAL.XLS is already
open."  I've checked for other open copies of PERSONAL.XLS, and there
is (apparently) only the one copy open.  When I delete the open copy
of PERSONAL.XLS (unhide it and delete it), none of my macros work.

This only affects a couple (out of a dozen or so) Excel macros, all of
which are in the PERSONAL.XLS sheet.  This problem seemed to start
occurring after I migrated from Excel 97 to Excel 2000.

Any ideas on what's causing this and how I can fix it?

I suspect you have two personal.xls files - one left over from Excel 97 and
one created in Excel 2000 (I believe Excel 2000 puts its personal.xls in a
different location from Excel 97).

If you have custom button on your toolbars that use macros in the
personal.xls, they probably refer to the old one - and when excel 2000
starts, it has already loaded the newer one.  You should go through your
buttons and redirect them to the new personal.xls and move your macros
there.

Just a possible scenario.

xl 2000 stores it in the  C:\Windows\Profiles\Username\Application
Data\Microsoft\Excel\xlStart   hierarchy.
xl97 used the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\xlStart    directory

Either of the above is probably not exact and would certainly need to be
modified to reflect your actual installation, but are illustative of where
to look.

Excel 200 Macro Error (PERSONAL.XLS already open)
Thanks, Tom.  That was exactly it, two versions of PERSONAL.XLS,
stored in different directories, with the error generating Toolbar
buttons pointing to the older, defunct directory.  I got them directed
to the current PERSONAL.XLS and everything is working fine.
