 Cell highlight problem in Excel97

Excuse me if this has been covered in this group previously. I
have several users that have experienced this. It seems when they open a
given spreadsheet, and proceed to highlight one particular cell, many random
cells become highlit at once. This continues with no particular pattern,
however, once started, the user must restart windows for normal operations
to resume.
We are an all NT 4.0 shop, with SP4 and Office 97 SR2B. All the
machines are Dell Optiplex GX1 PII450's.
Could this just be corrupted Excel files? Have checked the XLators
and XLstart directories for lingering data/macro files. If anyone has any
ideas please post. Thanks and have a great holiday!

 Cell highlight problem in Excel97
Hi Mike,            (posted to misc with email copy)
Don't know what the problem is, I think I've seen it myself,  but you should
not have to bring WinNT down.

If you have a major problem that can't be
resolved go to the Task Manager (RClick on task bar), Processes, and bring
down  Excel.exe with End Process.   You can sort on Image name if you can't
see it.

I know I have problems when my system is trying to connect to my ISP and is
waiting for a response from me.   I would also check that no response is needed
on the Excel or VB Editor.  But I don't know it that is where multiple selections
appear to be happening.   You might also try the Esc key in case you have
other pending operations.   Guess I should also stick in stuck Ctrl key.

If you can bypass the problem that beats taking down windows,  but if you find
out what actually causes it please reply post to your thread.
