Can't get small caps in style

I'm trying to create a Style for chapter headings in a
book and we want the word "Chapter" to be in small caps.
However, the Small Caps checkbox is grayed out when I
attempt to modify the Style.  Is there a way to do this?

Can you apply Small Caps to a paragraph in the style and then update the
style by example (reselect the style in the Style box and choose Update)?

No, because it's the word Chapter itself that I want in
small caps.  Once I type that word into the numbering
dialog box in front of the number one, then click on
Font, the small caps option is grayed out.  I've tried
typing it in small caps first and pasting it into that
little window and it turns it into full caps.

Ah, got you. It would appear that the Small Caps format is not available for
autonumbering. Sorry.
