Error while opening any file in Excel '97 on Windows 2000 Professional

When I open an excel file I get the following message:

"A document with the name 'file name' is already open. You
canot open two documents with the asme name. even if the
documents are in different folders. To open the second
document, either close the document that's currently open,
or rename one of the documents."

I do not have any other file open with the asme name.

Please help.

Thanks in advance.

Can't find anything in the KB about this one, but suggest the following:
Search for XLSTART.  Depending on your OS, there may be several folders,
usually at least two of them.  Move ALL of the files inside of these folders
to a temp folder you create (perhaps on your desktop for ease).  Don't just
copy, move them.  Now try opening a file in Excel.

When you open Excel, it opens every file stored in these folders.  Perhaps
you have a hidden "ghosted" instance of your worksheet due to a bad
shutdown.

Let us know if this helps or not.

Hello Bob,

I tried that, but both my folders were empty already.

Thanks for your effort.
