 Spelling Tab Greyed Out
I'm a newbie iMac user and I have been using OE for the time being as my mail application. Under preferences the spelling tab is greyed out. Why is it greyed out? (In other words can I do a spell check like I can on my PC). TIA

I got the answer in the help section. MS Office must be installed to use spell check. OE seems pretty useless without a spell check function. I'll be looking for another mail application.

I used to think the same thing.... Then I got MS office, a must have for those of us who love the mac, but live in a PC world!! MS office will solve many issues when dealing with those who think the PC is a better product! Can't believe that I went several years without it!! rob Quote:

No spell checking without MS Office. You could also try downloading a spell checker. There are freeware/shareware ones available out there. One that comes to mind is Excalibur (freeware). Dudmar

Unless they changed their policies -- I didn't stick around to find out -- Eudora freebie didn't spell check either unless you allowed your screen to be used as a billboard. Only one application is required, not entire MSOffice. Not sure if it must be current or can be old, and how old. -- Raizel Quote:

CompUSA has the Word and Entourage package for $119. This seems a pretty value for that price. Has anyone tried that package?

I'm not very fond of MS Office - but I do have it installed and working. Yet OE refuses to use the spellchecking - and the tab is greyed out. /Any ideas...? Michael A

Open MSWord and type some mumble. See if the speller works. Make sure the "language" is set (see your help as versions differ). If it isn't working, that affects OE. Mine has had this happen many times. -- Raizel Quote:

It only works with Office 98. If you have Office 2001, you should upgrade to Entourage and use that instead of OE.

I was just about to ask the same question actually. And I understand that the package is actually Word w/ Entourage SE. Does anyone have any clue what the difference is between Entourage and the SE version?? Quote:

Thank ypu for your answer, David. I use OE 5.02 and Office 98. It worked earlier, and no changes are made. So its still a mystery. /Michael

Yes. SE doesn't come with Palm or AppleScript support but everything else is the same. <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/office/2001/word/wordentse.asp>

Did you ever have Office 98 installed? If so I bet the proofing tools are still around on your hard disk.

Office 2001 was installed on a drive that never had Office 98: I did a drive switch in between the two releases (moved docs to own drive; apps to another). -- Raizel Quote:
