Err.: Word cannot recover an automatically saved document.
Hi Donald,
Does sound like a bit of document corruption may be present.
A couple of things you can try. Make copies of the documents to
try things on.
1. If you're on Windows98 see if you can open the document in WordPad.
2. In Word2000 in Tools=>Options=>General turn on [x] Confirm Conversions
on Open and in the Save Tab be sure 'allow fast saves' is turned off.
3. Do a find for .ASD and .TMP of about the time that you had the problem
occur and if any of them are about the same size as your lost file,
rename them to .DOC files and put them away as you may be able to
open them in some cases (also check for backups if you had the
'always create backup file' option on in Tools=>Options /Save\
then do Start=>Find and delete all remaining .TMP files and
scandisk and defrag.
4. Try renaming Normal.dot to Normalold.dot, then restart the PC in safe
mode to see if you can open the file. If so, then try the procedures
Subject: Q87856 for recovering corrupt .DOC files.
<<I have 2 documents (5hrs. work) I can't get to in word 2000. One doc
originated in Word 2000 the other in Word 97. Word 2000 froze and now
when I try to reopen them I get the msg. in the subject line followed
by "word can't import the specified format...". According to the
Microsoft support site the converter for Word 97 files is built into
word 2000 and does not need to be added. The files are cut and pastes
of screens with word drawing on top of them. Any ideas on how to
recover them.
Thanks,
Donald Smith>>
