 can't receive-norton update issue
I haven't been able to receive any of my email in Outlook Express since 12/10. I get the "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection..." error message. I use Norton Antivirus, and I downloaded the update they put out on 12/6, so I tried the fix that symantec suggests at: http://www.*-*-*.com/ But I still can't receive my email, and now I get an error message when I start up saying that the ccEmlPxy.dll file is missing or damaged. I checked, and the file is there. This is sort of turning into a Norton question, but I was wondering if anyone else encountered this while trying to fix their OE (plus I still can't get my email).

What happens if you completely uninstall all Symantec software? Nothing I've seen from them in recent years has been of a degree of quality that would inspire confidence. But, it's your money, your choice. You just won't find many here who would support installing any software from Symantec on a working computer (unless your intent is to "screw" that computer up). -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express Please reply to newsgroup only.

That's the impression I've been getting. What would you suggest as an alternative? Quote:

For antivirus protection, both AVG-Free and eTrust get high marks. They are also not as intrusive as some other versions. It's all a matter of choice, and I prefer AVG for its ease of updating. All a matter of choice. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express Please reply to newsgroup only.

Why wasn't I told this earlier? I am in some sort of zugswang wherein I have two versions of NIS installed, can't uninstall anything, can't open the integrator and can't received updates. Is there a magic word or phrase to get this freaking mess off my computer, and where can I get advice on what to put on to avoid hacking!?!? -- P D Sterling, --

If you have multiple version of Norton installed, you'll need advice from them on how to best proceed. We try to support Microsoft products in these newsgroups and not products from 3rd party vendors that most of us do not use. As for hacking, the best defense is a firewall, both a software one and a hardware one. Windows XP-SP2 has an excellent firewall in software and a router from most major manufacturers would be an excellent hardware firewall. With those in place, most hackers will give up, since it's easier to solicit users to infect themselves by inviting them to visit software sites that do "drive-by" installs of malware which is why your browser if inadequately set is your biggest hazard today, particularly if you regularly visit {*filter*} sites (and most {*filter*}s do visit them on occasion) with email "phishing" solicititations being the next biggest hazard. See this link for more about malware: Go here for info: http://www.*-*-*.com/ #malware And for a quick check: http://www.*-*-*.com/ -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express Please reply to newsgroup only.

Our normal advice is not to install ANYTHING from Norton or McAfee. We follow that advice and therefor can't help much when there are problems with it. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP, IE/OE Please respond in Newsgroup only.
